The Art of The Musical

On Wednesday, June 21, at 7:00 pm, Gary’s Gig will screen the 1961 musical film adaptation of Broadway’s most successful and honoured musical, West Side Story, at Theatre in The Wings. The film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won ten, including Best Picture. Sing along with the iconic songs…. song sheets will be supplied!

Inspired by Shakespeares’s Romeo and Juliet, the story is set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan and explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The Sharks, who are recent immigrants from Puerto Rico, and the Jets, who are white, vie for dominance of the neighbourhood, and the police try to keep order.
