Quinte West reminds residents of holiday safety tips over the next 12 days

Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services reminds residents to take extra safety precautions over the holidays.

Residents are encouraged to follow these 12 safety tips to stay safe during the excitement of the holiday season.

Tips for a fire-safe December

  1. Water real trees daily.
  2. Check that all decorative lights are in proper working order before installation.
  3. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on all floors and outside all sleeping areas.
  4. Test your carbon monoxide alarms.
  5. Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs.
  6. Extension Cords should only be used temporarily. 
  7. Never overload extension cords or power bars.
  8. Give space heaters space – keep heaters away from decorations and furniture.
  9. When you go out, blow out! Extinguish candles before you leave the room.
  10. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  11. Watch what you heat – do not leave cooking or pots unattended on the stove.
  12. Encourage smokers to smoke outside.
  13. Be responsible when drinking alcohol.
