Permanent repair work on the Trenton water main to begin Wednesday

A permanent repair for the primary Trenton Water Service water main will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

The permanent repair, which was presented to and approved by Quinte West Council during the Sept. 6 Council meeting, includes the installation of a flexible Primus Line liner that will be placed inside the existing water main through an open section of the pipe. This flexible liner is able to accommodate 45-degree bends in the pipe. Air or water pressure is used to inflate this liner against the existing pipe wall. This option will maintain water service to Trenton water service customers for the duration of the repair work and will have little to no impact on traffic in the surrounding area.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of the month. The estimated cost of the permanent repair is $755,000. The total cost of the repair is approximately $1.2 million, which will be funded through water capital reserve funding.

On July 17, Quinte West’s Public Works staff discovered a significant break in the primary Trenton Water Service water main located under the Trent River beside the D.J. MacDonald Bridge in Trenton. The City continues to investigate the cause of the water main break. A temporary repair clamp was installed on July 18 and on July 25, Cobourg Development Services completed the installation of a temporary water pipe along the north sidewalk of the D.J. MacDonald Bridge. This temporary solution will remain in place until the Primus Line system is fully installed.
