World Town Planning Day: Meet Katie Whitehead

Q: What is your role with Quinte West?

A: As the area planner intern, I work closely with the City’s area planners and the residents of Quinte West on various planning projects, ranging from individual site plans to subdivisions. From pre-consultation to completion, I assist the area planners with consents, minor variances and zoning bylaw amendments outlined in the Planning Act. I help residents with their planning needs by answering their questions, clarifying what uses are allowed on their property, and ensuring they comply with zoning bylaws. I have also researched the urban tree canopy and developed public information sheets for accessory structures, fences, swimming pools and decks.

Q: How long have you worked for the City?

A: I started working for the City of Quinte West in 2017 as a high school co-op student.

Q: What do you like most about your job, and what is the most challenging part?

A: I really enjoy my job because it allows me to work with people and continue to learn about the unique properties that make up our city. The City of Quinte West is very diverse in terms of our urban and rural community landscapes. The most challenging part of my job has been learning all of the policies and regulations involved in the planning process.

Q:How do you start a career/get a job like yours? (i.e., education, training, etc.)

A: I am in my final year of study at the University of Waterloo, where I am taking my Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Planning. After I graduate, I will work on becoming a planner by obtaining my Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation.

Q: What’s your favourite thing to do/see/eat in Quinte West?

A: My favourite thing to do in Quinte West is see a movie at the Centre Theatre or go kayaking in the Bay of Quinte.
