Smoke alarms – Don’t wait, check the date!

The Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services are holding their annual smoke alarm program throughout the month of November. This year’s program invites residents to visit their local fire station for the opportunity to exchange an expired smoke alarm for a new battery-operated alarm, meet Fire and Emergency Services staff, and learn about the importance of working smoke alarms.

“Working smoke alarms provide the precious seconds needed to safely escape a residence in the event of a fire,” says Fire Prevention Officer Dave Wheeler. “Testing your smoke alarms monthly and checking to ensure the alarm is still within its 10-year expiration date are practices that can save lives. Don’t wait, check the date!”

Quinte West residents can visit any of the municipality’s seven fire stations on Wednesday, Nov. 23 or Wednesday, Nov. 30 between 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. to exchange expired battery-operated smoke alarms for a new battery-operated smoke alarm to be installed in their home. Firefighters will be available to answer any questions that visitors have about smoke alarms and fire safety.

Those unable to attend a fire station can call Quinte West Station 1 at 613-392-6557 to set up an appointment for firefighters to visit their home to check their smoke alarms.
