Cemeteries across the city were vandalized over the weekend including two locations maintained by the City of Quinte West. The Quinte West OPP are investigating these incidents, where approximately 50-75 monuments were defaced.
In the meantime, a contractor is assessing each of the stones that were vandalized at the two City-maintained cemeteries that were affected. The monuments will be cleaned and returned to as close to their original condition as possible. Please DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE MONUMENTS YOURSELF. Using the incorrect cleaner or solvent may cause the stain to absorb into the stone and become more permanent.
“This thoughtless crime is incredibly upsetting to the families and other loved ones of people laid to rest in our cemeteries,” says Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison “We are working to have all necessary repairs completed as soon as possible.”
